Shirley is a native of Michigan, and has been actively doing genealogical research since 1967. She has taught genealogy classes in Community Education Programs at various high schools in the area. She has also been a guest lecturer for several Michigan State University Programs.

Shirley is a frequent speaker at many societies in Michigan. She has been a speaker at the Great Lakes Conference in Ft. Wayne, IN; MMGS Seminar "The Promised Land" in '96; the Ontario Genealogical Society Seminars in 1995, 1996,1998, 2001 and 2002; the Ohio Genealogical Society seminars in 1997 through 2002 and The Millennium Conference in Ft. Wayne, IN. She has also organized research trips to the Allen County Library in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

Shirley is the past president of the Eaton County Michigan Genealogical Society and the Mid-Michigan Genealogical Society. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Courthouse Square Association, Inc. (CSA). This foundation was formed for the preservation and rehabilitation of the 1885 courthouse in Eaton County, Michigan. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Friends of the Michigan Women's Historical Center and Hall of Fame in Lansing, MI.

Shirley is the co-founder of the Hodges Family Association and serves as the editor of the Hodges Family Association Newsletter.

In 2006 Shirley was elected to the office of President of the Genealogical Speakers Guild.  She became a columnist for The Global Gazette in June 2006.
